German football fans on rampage after national team loss in Euro Cup final

Berlin : German football fans went on a rampage in three eastern German cities, Magdeburg, Bautzen, Schwerin late Sunday evening after their national team was defeated by Spain in the final match of the 2008 European Cup, the press reported.

A group of rioters marched through Magdeburg’s city center, pelting police with stones and bottles and setting garbage cans on fire.

At least eight police officers were slightly injured and several police vehicles were damaged.

Scores of rioters were arrested, according to news reports.

In Bautzen, around 400 rioters clashed with police, leading to 16 arrests.

Two policemen were hurt in the street fights.

In Schwerin, around 300 people rioted, burning trash bins and throwing stones, according to police.

At least three police officers were also injured.

Minor scuffles were also reported from the eastern city of Halle where frustrated football fans clashed with police.

Numerous bus stations and garbage cans were damaged and 17 police were sightly hurt.

Last week, several German cities became also the scene of far- right riots and racial attacks late Wednesday night following Germany’s thrilling 3-2 win over Turkey in the semi-finals of this year’s European Cup football tournament.
