Tokyo : Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura met Monday with visiting United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, undertaking to work with the UN on such issues as climate change, African development and soaring world food prices.
As the international community as a whole is faced with challenges of global warming, African development and hikes in food prices, Japan is willing to cooperate with the UN to tackle these issues, said Komura during talks with the UN chief.
Ban, for his part, said he was pleased that Japan has put high on the agenda of the G8 summit the issues of climate change, the worldwide food crisis and the eight-point Millennium Development Goals, which are also imperative for the world body.
Ban arrived in Japan Saturday, the first leg of his two-week Asia tour. The UN chief is scheduled to leave Tuesday for China and South Korea, before returning again to Japan to attend the G8 summit at the Toyako (Lake Toya) resort in Hokkaido.
