Amman : Jordan and Britain have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to frame the cooperation between the two sides in the nuclear field to pave the way for signing an agreement by the end of this year.
The MoU was signed Sunday on the Jordanian side by chairman of the Jordanian Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) Khalid Touqan and on the British side by chairperson of the UK Atomic Energy Agency Lady Barbara Thomas Judge.
During a joint press conference, Touqan said signing the MoU aims at establishing nuclear cooperation between the two countries, pointing out that Lady Barbara met with Jordanian officials to approve a number of terms for signing the agreement.
He added that the meetings addressed the issue of exploring mineral and nuclear materials in Jordan where Judge expressed willingness to provide Jordan with British technology and knowledge in cooperation with the JAEC in exploring and mining and nuclear materials In Jordan.
Lady Barbara promised to exert every possible effort to secure the supply of nuclear fuel for the nuclear reactors to be established in Jordan, Touqan noted.
He pointed out that Jordan linked this issue to giving the priority to the British companies which are interested in mining the nuclear materials in Jordan.
Touqan said that the new item in the British proposal is the readiness to work hard to guarantee providing Jordan with nuclear fuel.
For her part, Lady Barbara said that Jordan and Britain are working together on the issue of building a peaceful nuclear reactor with the aim of achieving development in the energy sector for the interests of the two nations.
She added that the world is appreciating Jordan over implementing the best practices for building a nuclear safe and transparent reactor.
Lady Barbara said Jordan is fortunate for having sources of uranium and other natural materials, affirming her country’s readiness to help Jordan to implement the right way to extract uranium.
