According to FAO figures more than 300,000 cattle head have died from the cold wave since December.

FAO officials expressed concern extreme cold has affected the main sources of nutrition of the Afghan people, who are already suffering from food shortage in the NATO-occupied country.

A recent UN report claimed the harshest winter weather conditions in 30 years have killed 800 people, while heavy snowfall has blocked access to remote areas.

“Without assistance, they risk even greater food insecurity,” FAO warned.

The report added that purchasing power of Afghans has worsened due to the high prices of oil, vegetable oil and cereals.

The FAO added that the country could not import the necessary amounts of wheat to satisfy commercial requirements this year and also requires at least 100 thousand additional tons to cover humanitarian aid.
