Kaula Lumpur : South Africa beat defending champions Pakistan by 98 runs in the rain-affected second semi-final of the U-19 World Cup cricket here Saturday. The young proteas will now meet India for a title clash Sunday.
South African bowlers got eight Pakistani wickets for 67 runs after play was resumed on the reserve day because of heavy rains, which stopped the play Friday.
Pakistan had scored 86 runs after losing two wickets in 18.5 overs when it started pouring.
The defending champions chasing a revised target of 252 in 47 overs crashed out to 153 in 39.3 overs, dashing hopes of a mouth-watering clash between the best of cricket rivals – India and Pakistan.
Pakistan, looking for a hat trick of victories in the championship, resumed the day needing 166 to win off 28.1 overs. But they lost Umar Amin, neatly stumped by Bradley Barnes off Pieter Malan, in the very first ball of the day.
From there, Pakistan never really looked like winning and the way South Africa strutted around in the field, it was clear the momentum had shifted.
Opener Ahmad Shahzad, the highest scorer for Pakistan, was caught at point off Adams for 60.
Off Spinner Yaseen Vallie of South Africa grabbed four wickets giving away just 25 runs. Medium-fast bowlers Wayne Parnell (2-39) and Roy Adams (2-220) chipped in with crucial wickets.
South Africa had batted superbly to post a total of 260 for 8 off 50 overs Friday with half-centuries from Rilee Rossouw (53), Jonathan Vandiar (50) and man-of the match Trevor Smuts (58).
Imad Wasim was the main wicket-taker for Pakistan returning with figures of 3-44.
