Human Rights, Africa and Women at UN

United Nations : The participation of the UN Secretary General in the sessions of the Human Rights Commission and the conclusion of the debates on Women is among the United Nations’ activities this week.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will attend the inauguration of the Seventh Session of the Human Rights Commission in Geneva on Monday and the opening session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development.

On Monday, High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres will kick off an eight-day mission in Uganda and Tanzania to review that UN agency’s programs in the two African countries.

The 52nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which opened on February 25 and has met several obstacles regarding gender equality and women’s advancement, will close this week.

The executive director of the UN Development Fund for Women, Joanne Sandler, actress Reese Witherspoon and the director of Avon Products Inc., will announce an association to end violence against women and promote their advancement.

Meanwhile, Russia took over the presidency of the Security Council in March, which will debate and approve a resolution that includes sanctions on Iran in retaliation for its production of enriched uranium.

Another activity scheduled for this week is the General Assembly’s debate of a draft resolution on the modalities, formats and organization of a high-level meeting on Africa’s needs for development, scheduled for September.

The UN headquarters will host a seminar on Catalyzing Peace-Keeping Actions on Wednesday, and a forum of the UN University about religion and multilateralism on Thursday.

A conference of the Economic Commission for Africa will open in Addis Ababa on Tuesday to promote the participation of African scientists in international research projects.
