Zardari told the Indian Times Now television news station that “above all, we do not need to have the nuclear card up our sleeves. We can brush it aside and work progressively for economic development.”

India, can have its place in the world as economic power and Pakistan can be its partner and also China’s, and prosper starting from development of both nations, he said.

Friction and disputes about their territories have led Pakistan and India to four armed conflicts (1947, 1965, 1971, and 1999) since they became independent States, and three of them were really important.

With that enmity, they launched themselves into an arm race in search for the atomic weapon, which both have today, while resentment and distrust between them prevail.

In reference to relations with the United States and Washington’s interest in deploying troops in the Pakistani tribal region, Zardari refused to give details.

He said the PPP accepted the US presence in Afghanistan. “It is a reality that the future government will have to face,” he said.

About the new Prime Minister, he said the PPP is currently analyzing appointment of a candidate that reflects the ideals of the whole party, which sees in this mandate an opportunity to restore democracy and the parliamentary rights.
