Kashmir Singh, who is about 60 years old, was released Monday from a prison in the eastern city of Lahore after being granted clemency by President Pervez Musharraf. Singh spent the night in a luxury hotel before being driven 25 kilometers (15 miles) to Wagah, the border crossing between Pakistan and India.

The white-bearded and bald Singh walked slowly to the border, accompanied by Pakistan’s Minister for Human Rights Ansar Burney, who had helped secure his release. A tearful Singh hugged Burney for a long time, and turned around to wave at scores of journalists and onlookers before stepping across.

I have no regrets for anything that happened to me … that life is over, Singh said.

Burney handed over Singh to Indian police officials who put their palms together in a gesture of thanks to the Pakistanis before leading him away.
