Brisbane : Andrew Symonds had a run-in again. But this time it was not with any Indian player, instead he shoulder charged a streaker during Australia’s innings at the Gabba.
Australia were trying to chase a target of 259 set by India in the second of the three-match Commonwealth Bank tri-series Tuesday.
Symonds, who with Matthew Hayden, was trying to repair the early damage done to Australian innings by pacer Praveen Kumar, who took three quick wickets, moved in from his non-striker’s position into the path of the streaker.
The man, who entered the field and dodged security guards and players, was felled by Symonds’ shoulder charge. The action was more like a rugby tackle. Interestingly, Symonds often trains with the Brisbane Broncos, the local rugby team.
Security personnel quickly surrounded the spectator and took him away. He was likely to be charged for ground invasion and ‘wilful exposure’.
In past such incidents, former Australia captain Greg Chappell once thumped a streaker on the backside with his bat but former Australia swing bowler, Terry Alderman, who tried a shoulder charge like Symonds ended up with a dislocation in the 1982-83 Ashes series and it cost him 18 months of cricket.
