The fully-grown leopard, aged about eight years, had strayed into Ujjain’s most exclusive residential area. The animal was first spotted at the district judge’s house from where it sneaked into the deputy inspector general’s official residence. Then it went to the house of the conservator of forests.

Though the leopard did not harm anyone, there was panic in the neighbourhood and a team from Indore was called to nab the animal.

The team comprising Forest Ranger P.K. Gautam, deputy rangers Avinash Dhariwal, G.P. Mishra, Uday Raj Pawar and D.C. Vyas reached Ujjain and tranquillised the animal.

“It was treated at Indore and then taken to Bagli Jungles at Dewas Thursday morning, where it was released,” Forest Conservator Sudhir Kumar said.

“Ujjain doesn’t have any forests within 50 km and this is the first incident of a big cat venturing into this town.

“Where the leopard came from remains a mystery.”
