New York : Kai Eide, a Norwegian diplomat, has been appointed the head of the UN mission in Afghanistan.
Eide replaces Tom Koenigs of Germany, who had stepped down in December after almost two years on the job.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon informed the UN Security Council Friday about the appointment, which took effect immediately.
