Ex-Pakistani minister in custody over human smuggling charges

Islamabad : A court on Saturday handed over a former Pakistani minister to investigators for questioning about his alleged involvement in human smuggling, officials said.

Mushtaq Victor, former deputy minister for Minority Affairs, was arrested last night by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on the charges of human smuggling on fake documents.

Victor was produced in the court of special magistrate and the FIA officials requested the court that he be handed over it their custody for questioning.

Special judge central Mushtaq Ali Sajjad remanded the accused to FIA on 7-day physical remand.

The former minister has been accused of sending people of fake documents and tempering passports.

FIA official Chaudhry Zulfikar told the court that the authorities want to make some recoveries and need more time to question the accused.

The court granted 7-day remand of the former minister to the FIA and ordered that he must be produced after seven days.

Victor was minister from 2003 to 2006 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

Geo television reported that Germany, Britain and Australia had also complained about his involvement in human smuggling.
