Gaza : Israel has decided to extend a tight siege on the West Bank, imposed since last Thursday, for an indefinite period of time.
Israel Radio, in a broadcast early on Sunday, quoted security sources as saying that the blockade on the West Bank would be reviewed during the course of the week and the relevant authorities would ponder prospects of lifting it in light of reports about the general security conditions.
Tel Aviv imposed the siege on the West Bank late on Thursday shortly after a lone Palestinian gunman attacked a seminary packed with Jewish religious students in West Jerusalem, killing at least eight of them.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Police declared that the regular force would remain on a state of high alert throughout Israel, particularly in Jerusalem, where policemen would be deployed around educational institutions.
The radio quoted a senior police officer as saying that the Israeli authorities would track down and detain several Palestinians, in the next few days, on suspicion of involvement in the deadly attack on the religious academy. The police had reported arrest of eight suspects.
The radio also reported that the police had interrogated the father of the attacker, Alaa Abu Duhaim, after flags of the Palestinian Islamic organization Hamas and Hezbollah were seen decorating the house of his family where the family members received condolences in Jerusalem.
