Berlin : The abuse of Iraq-based German embassy personnel by US soldiers has led to irritations in the relationship between Berlin and Washington, the weekly Der Spiegel said in a report to hit the newsstands on Sunday.
It cited a confidential report sent by Germany’s Ambassador in Baghdad Hanns Schumacher to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin which he detailed the abduction and mistreatment of three off-duty Iraqi security guards who were normally assigned to the German embassy.
One of the Iraqi security guards based at the German diplomatic mission was even seized out of Baghdad and transferred to a prisoner camp in the southern Iraqi city of Basra for four months.
While the US side has provided financial compensation to two of the Iraqi security guards following German complaints, it has yet to offer any apologies for the incident.
The German embassy employs around 120 Iraqis who are mainly in charge of security at the diplomatic compound.
Germany had strongly opposed the American invasion of Iraq in spring 2003.
