The gun-battle occurred in Qadis district Saturday when the militants opened fire at a police station. The police returned fire, killing two rebels on the spot and wounding three others, it said in a statement.

The ministry said the Afghan police also captured one more rebel during the clash.

The Taliban, fighting Afghan government and foreign troops since fall from power in 2001, have not made any comment.

More than 200 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in militancy-related violence this year in Afghanistan.
