Chandigarh : The Punjab government Monday announced that it would provide security to the witnesses of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal asked the state’s director general of police to take immediate measures to provide security to the witnesses in the cases of the November 1984 massacre of Sikhs in Delhi following the assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi.
An official spokesman said the government decided to provide them the additional security as they felt the protection given by Delhi Police was not adequate.
Human rights activist and Supreme Court advocate Harvinder Singh Phoolka had brought the issue to the notice of the chief minister.
Phoolka recently wrote to Badal that the Punjab police could instil better confidence in the minds of the witnesses and the surviving victims.
The spokesman said some witnesses had sought their relocation to Punjab as they feared danger to their lives after deposing against political bigwigs.
The chief minister assured the witnesses that he would take up the matter with the central government and the Delhi government.
