Kabul : At least 10 Taliban fighters were killed, including two commanders, in an operation jointly launched by Afghan and the coalition troops in Afghanistan’s southern province of Uruzgan, officials said Tuesday.
The operation began in Deh-Rawood district of southern Uruzgan province Thursday with Afghan forces backed by coalition troops still advancing in remote areas of the district, Juma Gul Hemat, provincial police chief told DPA.
“Since the start of the operation, 10 Taliban fighters, including two of their commanders, Mullah Sayed Rahim and Khan, were killed in Dehzak area of the district,” Hemat said.
The police chief said after a “comprehensive planning”, Afghan and US-led international forces conducted an operation to areas controlled by Taliban militants.
Hemat said two Afghan policemen were wounded during the operation, which has moved to Qala Naw and Shah Zafar areas of Deh-Rawood district.
The combined forces seized 12 AK-47 rifles during the operation.
The US military said Monday that their forces detained at least 10 suspected Taliban militants in an operation in Jawara district, also in Uruzgan province, for allegedly having links with other insurgents in the area.
Taliban militants are widely entrenched in southern provinces of Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan and Zabul, where they hold sway in several districts and from which they conduct terrorist assaults on other parts of the region.
Violence is again on the rise in Afghanistan after a lull during the winter, which followed the bloodiest year since the ousting of the Taliban regime some six years ago. The militancy left around 6,500 people, mostly insurgents, dead in 2007.
