Naxalites have Rs. 600 million to purchase weapons

New Delhi : The Indian government said Naxalites are reported to have a budget of Rs. 600 million to purchase weapons and explosives during 2007-09.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Indian Minister of State Sriprakash Jaiswal said an arrested extremist had revealed during interrogation by Jharkhand Police.

He said Naxalites have sophisticated weapons and communication system and get bulk of their weapons by looting and from illicit weapon manufacturing units.

Incidents of violence generated by naxalites have increased from 1,509 in 2006 to 1,565 in 2007. The number of causalities of security forces has gone up from 157 in 2006 to 236 in 2007, he added.
