Islamabad : Pakistani authorities detained 25 people Wednesday for questioning about two suicide blasts that killed 32 people in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, but offered no clues as to who was responsible, officials and local media said.
More than 100 wounded in Tuesday’s attack on the Federal Investigation Administration (FIA) building remained in hospital where the death toll rose to 28 with two more dying from their wounds Wednesday.
Four more people were killed in a separate suicide attack Tuesday at an advertising agency in Model Town, a predominately residential area in Lahore, the police said. A vehicle drove up to the house and exploded.
“It would be premature to pinpoint exactly which particular organization is responsible,” Azsar Nadeen, inspector general of police in Punjab province, told reporters after attending a funeral for those FIA officials killed in the blast.
The 25 arrests were made across Punjab province, with 12 of them in Lahore, the capital of the province.
“The way these attacks have been carried out show that those behind them are very, very well organized,” Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz told reporters, adding: “The purpose of the attacks was not only to target the FIA, but also to terrorize the public.”
Tuesday’s blasts were the latest in a 15-month campaign by suspected Islamic militants targeting security forces and political figures.
