“If you want to adorn yourself, it is not necessary that you opt for a heavily embroidered corset. Instead, accessories like embroidered stockings can be a great choice,” Varma told IANS.

“Moreover, in a warm country like India where long boots are not a good choice, stockings serve the purpose,” he added.

Titled “Lure of the East”, Varma’s autumn-winter collection drew inspiration from the cultural heritage of colonial South East Asia.

“For the collection, I looked at South East Asian countries like Burma, Indonesia, Thailand, China and Nepal, which have tremendous colonial influence in their lifestyle and clothing.

“You won’t see anyone wearing a sari on the streets of New York because they don’t have any knowledge about it. But here, one can easily find western influences.”

Dominated by gold, the palette encompassed reds, blacks, whites, mossy greens and teal.

The collection offered soft drape dresses with structured sleeves worn with masculine ties in blues and reds. The line had wide-necked jackets with matching belts and sarong skirts, short cropped cavalry jackets with long evening dresses as well as coats, kaftans and kimono dresses.

The designer used Spanish embroidery, quilting, laser-cut motifs borrowed from Chinese lamps to embellish the outfits.

Fabrics like disco ball shimmer fabric, velvet, net, sheer, and satin were pleated and textured to craft the silhouettes.
