New Delhi : A group of nearly 36 women activists, under the banner of Tibetan Youth Congress, were detained Wednesday after they tried to storm the Chinese embassy in the capital’s diplomatic area.
The all-women’s group started shouting slogans against China and chanted ‘free Tibet’, ‘No Olympics in China’ and ‘Dalai Lama Zindabad’. They were commemorating the 49th Tibetan Women’s Uprising Day. The demonstration started soon after the Chinese embassy opened for the day.
The activists, who were holding Tibetan flags, banners and placards, were immediately whisked away to the nearest police station.
“There was heavy police force outside the Chinese embassy and they took our women to police station by calling our demonstration illegal. Now we are going to launch a hunger strike, both in the police station and Tihar jail,” Kunchok Yanthcl, an activist, said.
Police said they have detained the protestors and may arrest them later.
“We have detained 36 women for demonstrating in the restricted area and trying to barge inside the Chinese embassy and they are being questioned at the Chanakyapuri police station,” deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi district) Anand Mohan told IANS.
Yanthcl said the protest was one of a series in India against the Beijing Games and to support a return march of exiled Tibetans back to their homeland.
