Lucknow : Frivolous cases were being referred by the Uttar Pradesh government to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), said union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswa here.
“The country’s premier investigation agency can take up only such cases that involve more than one state. It is not possible for CBI to take up anything and everything that is referred to it by the state governments,” the minister told reporters here Thursday.
Asked about the 10-month-old Mayawati government, which has so far referred eight cases to the CBI, Jaiswal said: “I am not aware of all the cases but sure enough that something like the police recruitment scam need not be referred to it when a detailed probe had already been carried out by the state agencies.”
He, however, agreed: “The CD controversy was a serious issue that could be considered. It is stated to involve other states and was also understood to be aimed at inciting some kind of social divide.”
Claiming that the state government’s formal request in this regard was yet to reach the union home ministry, he added: “Any final decision on that could be taken only after we receive a formal request.”
