The students took out a peaceful rally from the Mahatma Gandhi statue on the Marina beach to Nungambakkam, in the heart of the city.

“We are watching the pictures on TV channels and are terribly worried by the violence in our country,” said Tenzin Tsering, a student leader here.

She said the Tibetan refugees in Chennai had decided to begin the rally at the Gandhi statue on the beach as he is a symbol of non-violence. “We want freedom but we also believe in non-violence,” she said.

“We hope to continue the vigil tomorrow too,” Tsering said, hoping friends of Tibet from all over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry would join them in their prayers to see that peace returned to Lhasa.
