During the week, the faithful are expected to meditate on Jesus Christ, his suffering, his crucifixion and resurrection, which is commemorated as Easter.

Sunday morning saw thousands of devotees taking part in processions across the state, carrying tender coconut palm leaves to churches. The processions are held to commemorate Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

In Kochi, Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil, head of the Syro Malabar Church, led the holy mass and special prayers at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Christians constitute 22 percent of Kerala’s population of 32 million.
