“The AKP is clearly a democratic party which became the strongest party as a result of free, fair and democratic parliamentary elections in 2007,” deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg was quoted saying at a routine press briefing.

The decision by the chief prosecutor to close AKP is “aimed against the will of the Turkish nation,” he added.

Steg stressed that his country’s trust in the democratic and constitutional principles of Turkey, while voicing optimism that the Turkish constitutional court would rule against the motion.

The European Union had earlier expressed its strong opposition to the legal complaint, saying it was “unacceptable and not compatible” with the principles of the EU.

Turkey’s chief prosecutor has charged that the AKP has become a focal point for attempts to overturn the strictly secular ethos that underlies the country’s constitution.
