Shimla, March 25 (IANS) For the first time, a 70-seater plane will land in Himachal Pradesh’s scenic Kangra valley early next month, say officials.
The Kangra airport is located some 40 km from the popular resort town of Dharamsala, which attracts tourists, particularly foreigners, to the Tibetan settlement and the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile.
The first flight of the MDLR airlines group is scheduled to take place April 7, company sources said.
The number of flights between New Delhi and Kangra is not known so far.
Currently only a 48-seater aircraft is able to land here. But the size of the airport has been increased recently including cutting of tall trees near it to accommodate larger planes.
“We have received a letter from the MDLR group for starting flights between New Delhi and Kangra next month (April),” said K.K. Pant, district magistrate of Kangra district, Tuesday.
Sources said the fare is likely to be low so that the route becomes popular with travellers.
Himachal Pradesh has a negligible passenger air service with barely three tiny airports in the hill state.
