Gurgaon : The murder of Delhi Police’s senior police official Rajbir Singh by a close friend, who soon confessed to the killing, has left investigators flummoxed. They find many details puzzling.
They are surprised that two security officers accompanying Singh left him alone just before Vijay Bhardwaj shot him dead though they were always to stick with Singh as he faced constant threat from crime syndicates and terror outfits.
“We are yet to understand why his personal security officer and an assistant sub-inspector were not accompanying him. Or why Singh himself asked them to leave the room,” said a senior police official.
The 48-year-old assistant commissioner of police died after close friend and property dealer Bhardwaj, 42, fired at him from close range at his (Bhardwaj’s) office on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon road around 10.30 p.m. Monday following a row over money.
Bhardwaj later spoke to television news channels and confessed to killing.
The dramatic killing of Rajbir Singh, known widely as an “encounter specialist” for having shot dead 50 criminals in gun battles, stunned Delhi Police – he headed the newly formed Special Operations Squad of the force.
“We are surprised by the circumstances that led his friend to shoot him dead. It seems that Singh was harassing and pressuring property dealer Bhardwaj for some time to repay the loaned amount,” the official told IANS on condition of anonymity.
Police officials were also surprised about the money deals between two of them.
“Rajbir had loaned Rs.6 million to Bhardwaj. We are wondering from where Singh managed to amass so much money. His other property deeds would also be investigated now,” the official said.
Police officials investigating the murder said it might lead to problems for some senior Delhi Police officials who had dealings with Singh.
Investigators are also puzzled by a remarkable coincidence. Singh, an ace sharpshooter who enjoyed Z plus security, had himself given the weapon to Bhardwaj when the latter had told Singh about threats to his life.
Bhardwaj’s servant Krishna, who according to Bhardwaj’s confession invented excuses and sent Singh’s security officers out just before the murder, has been missing since the ibncident.
