Tel Aviv : Israel’s defense minister says he will soon allow 600 foreign-trained Palestinian police to take up positions in a West Bank town, the Associated Press reported.
Ehud Barak says the officers will be deployed in Jenin. The town is a site of frequent clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters.
The deployment is seen as an important step by the moderate Palestinian government to restore law and order in the West Bank. The police have been receiving special training in neighboring Jordan since January.
Barak says he is considering other relief measures to bolster the Palestinians.
