“We have reason to believe that the jail break could not have been possible without the connivance of some jail officials,” state Principal Home Secretary J.N. Chamber told reporters here Tuesday evening.

“The under-trials used the ventilator in the toilet to get out of the barrack but surely they could not have escaped out of the prison walls without the assistance of some insiders,” he added.

Those who escaped have been identified as Dheeraj, Anand and Promod. Dheeraj and Anand were facing trial in the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party Kisan Morcha leader Sabhajeet Singh in July 2007, while Promod was behind bars since August 2006 for allegedly killing Hashim, a resident of his village.

D.M. Meena, director general of prisons, was sent to Ghazipur to personally inquire into the whole affair.
