The US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher are the first top officials to visit Pakistan after the February 18 parliamentary elections.

Analysts say that American diplomats would urge the government and political leaders of the in-coming coalition to work with President Pervez Musharraf, a close ally of the United States in the so-called war on terrorism.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry and the US embassy were tight lipped over the visit, which coincides with the oath taking of the new Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani.

Gilani in his maiden speech at the National Assembly on Monday freed the deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and 60 other top judges.

The judges were sacked by President Musharraf on November 3rd when he proclaimed emergency and suspended the constitution.

Analysts say that Gilani’s first order to free judges will create tension with President Musharraf.

The American diplomats are scheduled to meet the President, new Prime Minister and other political leaders.

It is also stated that the US officials will also meet the army chief General Ashfaq Kayani during their trip to the country.
