New Delhi : India’s National Commission for Women (NCW) will inquire into the mysterious death of British teenager Scarlett Keeling in Goa last month, the commission said Thursday.
The NCW has taken a suo moto cognisance of the death and an inquiry committee led by Nirmala Venkatesh and S. Sood will visit Goa Saturday.
Keeling’s semi-nude body was found on the Anjuna beach in Goa Feb 18. The Goa Police have arrested two locals – barman Samson D’Souza and alleged drug dealer Placido Carvalho – on the charges of drugging and raping the 15-year-old.
Initially, the police contended that she died due to drowning but further investigations revealed she was raped repeatedly before she died.
“The two-member committee will visit Goa on March 29 to inquire into the circumstances which corroborated the occurrences of such an incidence,” NCW spokesman K.B. Thengamam said here.
The committee will meet the concerned police officers in charge of investigations.
“The committee will make the recommendations to punish (the guilty) and prevent recurrence of such incidents. The inquiry committee will also review the action taken by the district and police administration so far,” Thengamam said.
