DPRK warns of “great lesson” if South Korea continues to “provoke”

Pyongyang : The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) will not “remain an onlooker” following South Korea’s provocative actions on its West Sea (Yellow Sea) border, a DPRK Navy Command spokesman said Friday.

South Korea has dramatically increased troop deployment and has been holding frequent military rehearsals in the region, leading to a volatile situation, the spokesman was quoted as saying by the DPRK’s official news agency KCNA.

If the South continued its provocative actions, it would receive a great lesson from the North, he added.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that the DPRK launched three ship-to-ship missiles Thursday night.

The navies of the two Koreas clashed in 1999 and 2002 around the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the Yellow Sea, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. The NLL was not clearly demarcated when the Korean War ended in 1953.

Relations between Pyongyang and Seoul have become more tense since South Korea’s conservative new president, Lee Myung-bak, pledged to review rapprochement projects pushed by his two liberal predecessors.

Lee has said progress in international efforts to halt the DPRK’s nuclear program is a prerequisite for further large investment and aid projects in the North.
