Harare : The general elections Saturday in Zimbabwe are centering attention in southern Africa, while the future of a historic leader in the region, President Robert Mugabe, is being defined.
Considered a hero of independence, Mugabe aspires to be re-elected, with which he would assume a sixth mandate.
The leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai, and independent candidate Simba Makoni are Mugabe’s rivals.
The president of Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front
(ZANU-PF) party is facing a campaign orchestrated by western countries, including an economic and commercial blockade.
The measure responded to the Mugabe government’s decision to eradicate economic asymmetries in the country, as the best land was owned by a white minority.
The president, parliamentary deputies, and provincial governors are being voted on today, and in the case of the president, the winner must get more than 51 percent of the six million votes expected, otherwise, a runoff will be held.
