Ranchi gets first woman mayor

Ranchi : Rama Khalko was elected the first woman mayor of the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) Sunday with a margin of more than 20,000 votes.

The election of mayor, deputy mayor and 55 ward commissioners of RMC was conducted March 25 and the counting began March 27.

The final results came on the forth day of the counting. Ranchi Mayor post was reserved for woman. Rama Khalko secured over 46,000 defeating Ashrita Kujur.

For mayor post, there were 37 candidates in the fray and 78 candidates were fighting for deputy mayor post. Ajay Nath Sahdeo was elected deputy mayor.

Sahdeo defeated Pradeep Sharma by over 9,000 votes. He secured more than 27,000 votes. The defeated candidates have called for a strike Monday, alleging large-scale rigging in the election.
