China Seizes Weapons, Ammo from Monastery

Beijing : Chinese police seized weapons, ammunitions, explosives and knives from a Geerdeng’s Buddhist monastery in the Aba autonomous district, in the Sichuan province, official sources reported on Sunday.

The security forces in the region, locate at about 932 miles southeast of the capital, also confiscated a number of telecommunication equipments like satellite phones, faxes, computers and satellite TV receivers.

The arms cache was made up of 30 personal guns, 498 bullets, 8.8 pounds of explosives and a large amount of sharp instruments that can de used as weapons. In the Buddhist rooms they also found flags of the Tibetan government in exile and banners with Tibet independence slogans.

Chinese authorities have accused the Tibetan government in exile of promoting the March 14 violent riots in Lhasa, the Tibet capital, which left two dozen people killed and over 600 wounded, as well as considerable property damage.

The Geerdeng Buddhist Monastery normally has 600 monks registered, but now there are about one thousand, according to the main leaders of the place.

Local media informed of a visit to Lhasa by 15 foreign diplomats on Friday and Saturday, following an invitation by the foreign ministry for an in-situ check up of the situation in the region.

Representatives from United States, Japan, Russia, European Union countries, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Tanzania, and Singapore participated in the tour.
