Prime ministers from China, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos began the debates of an agenda also aimed at drawing up development guidelines for the next five years.

Laos host Bouasone Bouphavanh said he was convinced that this third meeting of the Greater Mekong SubRegion (GMS) will give more importance to the integration program outlined in 1992 in Cambodia when the states of the region decided to go into partnership.

GMS leaders and executives from related international organizations like the Asia Development Bank (ADB) will discuss the goals achieved in the last 15 years to focus themselves on immediate objectives.

Observers in Vientiane noted that the presence of Chinese prime minister Wen Jibao along with a large delegation of ministers, provincial governors and other top officials showed that Beijing has conferred great importance to this GMS Summit, which is held every three years.
