The UN-led five-day meeting in the Thai capital is aimed at boosting the Bali Roadmap, which resulted from the conference on climate change held in that Indonesian resort in December 2007.

UN spokespersons said participants in the Bangkok meeting would deal with adaptation, mitigation, the deployment of environmentally-friendly technologies and funding.

They added that a work plan for negotiations on the design of a pact to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which will expire in 2012, is expected, as well as measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developed countries.

The executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Ivo de Boer, pointed out that the challenge is to design a future agreement including significant actions on adaptation and reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions in 10-15 years.
