Chinese doctors, officials punished for negligence

Hefei (China) : Authorities in east China’s Anhui province have taken disciplinary actions against 10 doctors and officials for negligence of duties in handling the hand-foot-mouth disease that has caused 22 deaths in the province.

Song Yunxin and Li Guangming, both doctors with the Shaoying Town Hospital in Fuyang city, were demoted Saturday for delaying shifting a patient to the county hospital.

Wang Dongjun, a Lichen village doctor in Santa town, Taihe county, was fined 4,080 yuan ($583) for illegally injecting immune globulin on 17 children.

Wang claimed globulin could prevent the EV71 intestinal virus, which is one of the causes of the hand-foot-mouth disease. He charged 80 yuan for each injection.

Li Baohua, a Zhanxi village doctor in Santang town, was also punished for the same reason.

Li Peixun and four other officials were reprimanded by the government of Taihe county for failing to alert people in their area.

The number of Chinese children infected with the hand-foot-mouth disease continued to rise Monday, with reported cases exceeding 8,531, according to an estimate by Xinhua on the basis of official figures.
