Kuwait : The fourth constituency is the largest of the five with 98 contenders by April 23, the last day to file candidacy.
It covers 18 areas; Farwaniyah, Firdous, Omariyah, Rabiyah, Rigei, Andalus, Jeleeb Al-Shuyoukh, Sabah Al-Nasser, Shdadiyah, Seyhad Al-Awazem, Al-Rihab, Al-Adheiliyah, Al-Ardhiyah, Eshbeiliyah, Abdullah Al-Mubarak, Saad Al-Abdullah, Al-Jahra, and the desert area.
Most of the candidates in this constituency are in the 40-49 age group, 45 candidates at 45.9 percent. Candidates aged 50 and above came to 28 at 28.5 percent, while those aged 30-39 came to 25 at 25.5 percent.
In the old 25-constituency system, and the 2006 elections, the areas of the fourth constituency were covered by the 15th, 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th constituencies.
Back then, candidates came to 93, at 23.1 percent of the state’s total, which was 402 candidates.
As to educational level among the 2008 hopefuls, 62 candidates, some 63.2 percent, have university and higher qualification. Some 12.2 percent have diplomas, some 15.3 percent have high school certificates, and some 8.1 percent have secondary school certificates. One candidate holds a primary school certificate. The candidates include 13 people with PhDs at 20.9 percent of all contenders.
Women candidates were not less in qualification than male peers, with five candidates including one with a masters’ degree in law, two with licenses in law, and the remaining two with diplomas. in 2006, there were five female candidates; two with BAs, one with a diploma, and the remaining two with secondary school certificates.
In terms of number of voters, the constituents this year came to 93,710, at 39,359 male and 54,351 female voters, at a combined 25.9 percent of the state’s overall. In 2006, the overall was 90,036, with 36,365 male and 53,671 female voters, at a combined 26.4 percent of the state’s overall voters.
