Peshawar : Suspected Pakistani Taliban on Monday attacked a patrolling team of the army at the tribal region for the first time since they ended peace talks with the government, locals said.
One Pakistani soldier was injured in the attack at South Waziristan, they said.
Militants of Baitullah Mehsood group used automatic weapons to target the security forces at the Spinkai Raghzai area at around 12 noon, according to local administration.
The security forces used artillery to shell suspected positions of the militants. There was no report of casualties.
Local authorities said that Taliban fired at the patrolling team of Baloch regiments from the nearby mountains, injuring a soldier.
The soldier was taken to a military hospital at the town of Jandola.
The forces returned artillery fire at Jandola and Manzai areas of Mehsood tribe, according to locals.
They said that civilians fled their homes in panic, expecting resumption of hostilities after the end of peace talks.
Last week, Taliban spokesman Maulvi Umar announced that Taliban are ending talks with the government after the army refused to withdraw.
The new government had announced to hold dialogue with the militants if they lay down arms.
