Luanda : The African Development Bank (ADB) warned in media here Monday that the world food crisis could become worse in this continent.
A report released in Tunez said the ADB President Donald Keberuka and the general secretary of the institution Bedumra Conje will present the General Assembly’s program in Maputo from May 12 to 14.
Keberuka and Conje said the entity will put nearly five million dollars into African agriculture, which is not considered enough to cover the deficit approaching.
According to estimates from the leadership food shortage in Africais around 36 million tons.
Apart from the figure directed to palliate the situation the ADB director said a fund will be allocated of about 250 million dollars to help the poorest communities.
The Keberuka and Conje alert is based on what is happening in Asia where according to the general director of the Asian Development Bank Raja Nag about one billion people have suffered from rising food prices.
Nag emphasized that there are about 600 million people living on less than a dollar a day and another 400 million who receive only slightly more than that.
In experts’ opinion, the rise in food prices constitutes the first big crisis of this sector since the Second World War.
