Madurai (Tamil Nadu) : In a veiled criticism of West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat Wednesday said he favoured “redefining” the role of governors.
Reacting to a specific question on a remark by CPI-M’s Biman Bose, who is convenor of West Bengal’s ruling Left Front, demanding abrogation of the centrally appointed gubernatorial post, Karat said: “We have always said that the governor’s post needs to be redefined. Shortly, this will be taken up by us with the centre-state relationship panel.”
Karat was on his way back to Chennai from Uthapuram village near here, where a “caste wall” was breached by the state’s ruling DMK party Tuesday – a move he praised.
Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Wednesday started a campaign to save power at his official residence of Raj Bhawan as a token of sympathy for the masses of West Bengal that have to live with power cuts. The CPI-M-led Left Front government is miffed at the move.
