Bhopal : At least four members of a marriage party are feared to have drowned when a boat carrying them capsized in the river Narmada in Madhya Pradesh’s Narsinghpur district early Thursday morning.
“The overcrowded boat carrying about 40 people lost balance in the middle of the river (and capsized). While most of the passengers including the bridegroom, Khemchand, 21, managed to swim to safety, at least four people are missing,” Narsinghpur Police Superintendent Sai Manohar told IANS by phone.
The marriage party, hailing from Piparha village of Narsinghpur district, was on its way to Taradehi village in Damoh district.
Those feared drowned have been identified as Jitendra, 16, Mahendra, 22, Rajju, 20, and Rakesh, 19. Divers have been pressed into service to search for their bodies while the boatman, Marru, is absconding, the police said.
