Kolkata : Following on the footstps of West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee decided to observe two-hour voluntary power cut at her residence here from Friday to show solidarity with the Kolkatans who have since April been suffering infrequent electricity supply.
“I congratulate Gandhi for his wise decision. Inspired by him, I too will keep my residence at Kalighat in south Kolkata and the party offices here in darkness from 4-6 p.m. daily Friday onwards till the government finds a solution to power shortage,” Banerjee told reporters Thursday.
Gandhi started observing a two-hour of voluntary power cut at his offiial residence Raj Bhavan since Wednesday.
Gandhi’s media spokesperson Dhruba Gupta told IANS: “Initially, it was decided the governor will observe the power cut 7-9 p.m. But he changed his schedule for unknown reasons. Raj Bhavan’s power supply was stopped 1.30-2.30 p.m. and 6-7 p.m.”
“In the first phase of power cut Wednesday, he was outside Raj Bhavan for official works. The employees present inside completed their work in the daylight. In the evening, Gandhi spent one hour of darkness in the balcony of his suite,” Gupta said.
