Electricity resumed in parts of Yangon, Myanmar

Yangon : Electricity supply has been resumed in some parts of Myanmar’s biggest city of Yangon, after the city was devastated by the violent cyclone Nargis.

A total of more than 4,000 electric workers were mobilized to repair the power lines which were mostly blown down with lamp-posts or by fallen trees.

Electricity in most important infrastructures in Yangon such as airports, key media stations, hospitals, banks and some key factories as well as some residential communities has been resumed.

Power consumption in Yangon was 200 megawatts before it was hit by cyclone and over 40 mw had been resupplied, the electricity authorities confirmed Saturday.

Meanwhile, water supply has also been in place in the city with95-percent access, the municipal authorities claimed.

Communication stations in Hainggyi Island, one of the hardest-hit areas in southwestern Ayeyawaddy division, has reopened in the last two days, official media reported.

Water transport from Yangon to most of the cyclone-hit areas in the division have been resumed for freight handling with some relief materials being shipped there.

A relief camp in a suburban township of Hlaingtharyar in Yangon has been opened with cyclone victims of Padan village being accommodated by tents donated by China.

The deadly tropical cyclone Nargis, which occurred over the Bay of Bengal, severely hit last weekend five divisions and states — Yangon, Bago, Ayeyawaddy, Kayin and Mon. According to a death toll released up to Friday evening, a total of 23,335 people have lost their lives in the cyclone storm with altogether 37,019 people remained missing and 1,403 injured.
