Brussels : European Union development ministers are to hold an emergency meeting in Brussels on Tuesday to review the situation and to mobilizes humanitarian aid to Myanmar/Burma in view of the massive scale of destruction and need caused by the cyclone Nargis.
The meeting has been called by EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel , after Burmese authorities agreed to receive international assistance , noted an European Commission statement Monday. “It is our sincere wish to work in close co-operation with the Burmese authorities to urgently alleviate the sufferings of the Burmese people affected by the cyclone”, said Michel who will be traveling to Burma after tomorrows meeting.
Burmese state-run media said Sunday that the death toll had risen to over 28 , 000 while more that 33, 000 were still missing following the Nargis cyclone that struck Burma a week ago.
