“Information from detainees led coalition forces to a location south of Mosul where they were targeting associates of a suspected AQI (Al-Qaeda in Iraq) facilitator,” it said in statement Sunday.

“Surveillance teams observed a vehicle leave the target building and followed the suspected terrorists,” the statement noted.

“After the suspects’ vehicle made several stops at other locations, dropping off and picking up additional men, coalition forces attempted to stop the vehicle.

“Coalition forces fired three warning shots, but the driver refused to stop and one man made threatening movements from inside the vehicle,” the statement said.

“Coalition forces responded to the perceived threat and engaged the vehicle, killing two armed men inside, and a woman and child in the vehicle were also killed in the engagement,” the statement added.

“Coalition forces sincerely regret when innocent civilians are killed during our operations to rid Iraq of terrorists,” said Navy Capt Gordon Delcambre, the MNF-I spokesman.
