Beirut : An Arab team of politicians arrived in the Lebanese capital by air on Wednesday in a fresh bid to work out a settlement among the warring parties.
The team, led by the Qatari foreign minister, arrived at Rafic Al-Hariri Airport, aboard a Qatari aircraft, it was officially reported.
Navigation through the air facility has virtually come to a halt since opposition activists blocked roads leading to it, as part of an armed campaign against the camp of pro-government loyalists.
The Arab team will seek to settle some thorny political issues such as election of a new president and working out a new formula for power sharing.
The latest crisis broke out after the government of Fuad Al-Siniora dismissed a senior military officer serving at the airport over discovery of a camera said to have been used by the opposition to spy on activity at the airport.
The cabinet had also decided to dismantle the communication network of the main organization in the opposition camp, Hezbollah — prompting the opposition to resort to arms and occupy various parts of the Beirut region and some rural areas.
The measures sparked off violence in several regions that took more than 60 lives.
