Indian photographer wins ticket to the Olympics

Kolkata : A photograph of a boy in suspension moments before plunging into a pond has won photographer Anindya Majumdar $5,000 and a trip to the Beijing Olympics with his wife.

Visa International, the official partner for Beijing Olympics, announced the winner from India of the international pre-Games photography competition here Wednesday.

The competition was divided into four themes – Faster, Higher, Stronger and China. Santanu Mukherjee, Visa’s country manager for South Asia said amateur photographer Majumdar had won the prize for the ‘Higher’ theme. He is the only winner from India.

Mukherjee said: “Majumdar’s photograph of a boy in suspension over a pond before taking the plunge actually portrays the theme ‘Higher’.”

Any Indian who had visited the countryside could relate to this picture, he added.

Majumdar will travel to Beijing with his wife during the Olympics and will receive a cash prize of $5,000.

Majumdar has won many national and one international photography competition earlier.

In Beijing, all the country winners have to click eight photographs each, which the company will judge. The overall winner will get another $3,000.
