Local commentators emphasized the message of the head of the federal government to celebrate the recent 62nd anniversary of his National Organization Party of United Malaysians (UMNO).

Abdullah Badawi highlighted the need to concentrate financial resources in a direction that will protect the population, prevent the food crisis and reduce inflation.

Mishandling of this situation could revert to peoples’ loss of confidence in the administration, he warned to his fellow party members in UMNO, giving detailed steps to follow in this sense.

Particularly, Badawi mentions the recent increase of subsidies for fuel, up to nearly 14 billion dollars and creation of a commission in charge of stopping the steeply rising inflation.

The country will also invest about 30 million dollars on rice reserves.

Malaysian authorities recently created an emergency fund of 4 billion dollars to palliate the food supply crisis in Asia, particularly rice.
